| Tin Pan Alley
is Jörgen Andersson, Jens Johansson, Linnéa Kuster and Sofia
Thulin. They all come from Lidköping, Sweden, although some of them
currently live in Stockholm and Gotenburg. Jens and Jörgen got to know
eachother in the mid eighties. Jörgen was well known on the local music
scene and was also running the local record store. He had the biggest collection
of synths and was a huge sound and music fanatic. Jens was a guitarist and
younger people came to him to learn how to play the instrument. They both
frequently played in various local bands, but never together. It wasn't until late 1995 that they started talking about doing something together. They had a common idea about what type of music they thought that they, with their different musical background, could create. They wrote two songs, without lyrics or proper melodies, that set the mood they were aiming for. These songs later evolved into "Miffed" and "Happy". |

Linnéa and Sofia were contacted separately in January 1996. They were given one song each for the audition. The lyrics and the melodies were developed together with the girls and when the vocals were recorded everything was set - both girls joined the band. The different voices and personalities suited the band perfectly! Sofia with the dark and slightly coutry influenced voice, developed during her time in an all girl rock band, and Linnéa's light soprano, which she had previously mostly used for folk and classical music at the local music school. They met in their own studio, the Blue Motel, during the weekends and composed new songs together. They felt that the spirit of their co-operation was clearly present in the music and they knew they had something special going on.
| In the autumn of 1996 they signed a record deal with Sidelake Music and started recording their first album, tentatively named "A Man Can't Just Sit And Wait", in February 1997. Tin Pan Alley and their co-producer Eric S worked together at Sidelake studios in Sundsvall. And now, in 2001, after years of agonizing delays, the band can finally release their album "Via Copenhagen" through Bonnier Music. A lot of new songs have been added compared to the original idea for the album, but with the help of today's technology it is also possible to look back upon the early days of Tin Pan Alley. The band wanted the album to feature songs spanning their entire carreer, not just the more radio friendly tracks, as they feel there's a development in their music - from small town agony to big city agony. | ![]() |

Already from the start they were aware that the music and lyrics they wrote had a very unique feeling to it, and they wanted everything around the music to reflect this. They wanted music and images to form a unity. From the beginning the band made sure they worked with people who colud understand their vision. Tin Pan Alley have worked closely with Thomas Kurppa for photos and record sleeve design, and with Mårten Levin for photos and music videos. They are also working on their own fashion collection together with designer Tomas Holmlund. Eric S has been on board since the start as producer and has also made some remixes for the singles.
| Describing
the music of Tin Pan Alley is no easy task. People have compared it to Björk,
Enya, Daybehavior, Saint Etienne and even Depeche Mode. They have developed
a unique sound, ranging from spooky Twin Peaks strings, harsh drum loops
and twisted electronic sounds to (more or less) danceable pop. The members of Tin Pan Alley have lived with the band for quite a long time now, but they are also doing other things outside the band. Both Jens and Jörgen are also writing music for and producing other artists. Music is their life, basically. Sofia is working extra as a model alongside her photography studies, and Linnéa is studying in Gothenburg to become a librarian. They have all been looking forward to sharing their music and releasing their debut album "Via Copenhagen" which is out now! |
